Have you heard the story of an elephant and his mahout ? Once upon a time their used to live a young elephant with a beautiful and craving trunk. He was a temple elephant much revered and loved by the people of his town. Every day he was taken to stroll out for a walk in the evening in the busy bazar. The busy bazar filled with vendors bargaining with their customers, children crying for balloons and people quenching their thirst with sweet coconut water. The young elephant used to act as it pleased while walking through the lane. He used to grab the bunch of bananas hanging through the cart and gulp it before the vendor could stop him. Another time he used to pluck the flowers arranged and grab coconut drink from the customers quenching their thirst. The mahout used to stop him from doing this all. He even used to beat him with his stick but the elephant wouldn’t resist the bananas and coconuts.
So mahout once got an idea to make him stop doing all this. Before going on the evening walk with the elephant he gave him a stick. The elephant being obedient to the mahout hold the stick with his trunk and rolled it up. Then they went for the walk now when banana cart approaches the elephant wide opening his eyes looks towards it but having stick rolled up his trunk he would leave the fruit alone. As trying to eat the fruit he should drop the stick which would mean offending the mahout. Ever since the elephant held on the stick while evening walk and not disturb the merchandise in the shop. The shopkeepers and vendors were delighted, their admiration for elephant grew and they used to hand over gift to mahout for the elephant to eat later.
We are the Elephants :
If you think about it we are all like that elephant. As we go through our life we too get distracted by temporary temptations. We are often told by our mahout i.e our parents, our teachers and well wishers to not do that thing but still we don’t listen to them and do things like binge watching, surfing social sites and non stop chatting. All we need is a stick to hold and that stick is a “goal”. The day we realise our goals we get focused on each thing we do and make efforts in that direction. Goal is that stick to us which keep you move in the forward direction of our journey. If you want to stop doing one thing start something else. For Instance you want to stop wasting time on social media instead try to read a book when ever you feel the urge. “Having a life without goal is like painting a canvas without colour”.
